Dax Shepard’s CHiPs is a gleefully crude buddy-cop romp based on the old California Highway Patrol series, with Shepard as battered ex-motocross rider Jon Baker and Michael Peña as cocky undercover Fed Frank “Ponch” Poncherello. Shepard wrote and directed it, and you can feel how much fun he and the cast were having.
It is superbly infantile — perfect lads’-night fare — packed with motorcycle stunts, vulgar banter and a superb supporting cast that includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Rosa Salazar, Adam Brody and Kristen Bell. Critics were sniffy; I very much enjoyed it.
If you like the silly energy of The Inbetweeners Movie, this is well worth a watch with a beer and a pizza.
